I have always enjoyed and achieved highly in science and maths. I also appreciate problem solving and the feeling of achievement associated with the practical use of design and technology, which I studied to GCSE level. Throughout the course I worked with materials including plastics, woods, and metals and designed and built various items including a table lamp and a propagator for germinating seeds.
I have been involved in various projects with my father, including erecting a pergola, a wooden shed and building a large brick shed at the bottom of the garden. I also constructed a wooden chicken coop to my own design. These projects have given me an insight into dealing with building regulations and the need for planning, design and accurate measurement. I have gained experience in the use of building materials, taking both cost and physical properties into account.
Studying civil engineering at university will provide me the opportunity to further study the areas of science, maths, design and technology that I enjoy, as well as to gain many other skills. Studying civil engineering will offer me a wide range of challenging and fulfilling career opportunities. I would like to apply for the foundation year, which after completion, will allow me to progress onto the civil engineering course. I am particularly interested in how civil engineering skills can be applied with maximum benefit to society whilst having minimum impact on the environment.
I did two weeks work experience with a consultant paediatrician in ------- Hospital in ---------- during the Easter holidays of 2008. I also did two weeks work experience with a general dental practitioner in ----------------. Both of these experiences showed me the importance of communication skills, leadership and teamwork in the smooth running of an organisation. After further consideration, I realised that I would not be happy in the healthcare profession and instead was drawn more towards civil engineering, which I feel is closer to my interests.
During the last two years, I have participated in the school?s community action group, which involved weekly visits to a retirement home in -------- to organise a coffee morning for the elderly residents. We served tea and biscuits and provided company to those who attended. During the school?s activities week in June I helped out in classes at the ------- School for children with special educational needs. Outside school, I did voluntary work at St. Anne?s Hospice charity shop on Saturday mornings. I have also received a certificate from Millennium Volunteers for completing 117 hours of voluntary work.
In school I am a silver prefect and am involved in the running of the ------ society. I enjoy languages and am learning ------- in my spare time. I attended a one month intensive ------ course in the summer holidays at the ----- centre in -------. I have attended a twenty hour weekend course by I to I on teaching English as a foreign language arranged by my school. I am a keen gardener with an interest in permaculture. I grow fruit and vegetables in our back garden and also keep several hens. This has made us self sufficient in eggs and Jerusalem artichokes and gives a good crop of strawberries in the summer.
范文二
“The Foolish Old Man Removing a Mountain” is an allegory known to virtually every Chinese. The story tells that in ancient times there was an old foolish man by the name of Yu Gong who was determined to remove the WangWu Mountain, a mountain that blocked him and his family from having access to the outside world, in an attempt to carve out a road leading to the outside world and hence create conditions for his posterity to achieve economic prosperity. The project was a Herculean task and, to make the matter worse, the old man was rather advanced in age. His neighbors all came to dissuade him from the endeavor. But the old man’s answer was that if he should die, his children and grandchildren could succeed him. The day would come when the mountain could be removed ultimately.
Inconceivable as they are, modern versions of this allegory occur in the frequently impoverished mountain areas in present-day China. The mountain folks resort to primitive manual labor (hence inevitably involving casualties) and simple tools and usually spend many years, even more than a decade, to open up routes inch by inch in order to have access to the market outside the deep mountains to sell their farm produce, so that their descendants will no longer be confined to the kind of isolated and economically unprivileged life that they are living. As a student with a Master’s degree in Road & Railway Engineering, I can never maintain a tranquil state of mind whenever I read of stories of this kind. I tell myself that I have the obligation and responsibility to help halt this dire reality. For this reason, I am determined to seek a Ph. D. program in Communication & Transportation at your esteemed university, a program that will enable me to reward my country with my knowledge of the advanced transportation engineering technology in the world. Of course, I am soberly aware that to be accepted into your highly-respected program I will inevitably be faced with fierce competitions. Nevertheless, my sound academic background, rich work experience and the ability to undertake independent academic research all testify to my qualifications as a worthy candidate for your program.
My choice for Industrial and Civil Airport Construction and Highway Airport Construction and Highway during my undergraduate program at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, XX University, seemed to have derived from my family tradition. My father has long been a construction engineer and my interest in civil engineering grew as I saw my father working on construction plans and drawings and picking up bits and pieces of civil engineering knowledge. My academic performance at XX University, which is a key university in the country, has been consistently characterized by top ranking, receiving Student of Excellence award for four consecutive years. My solid and comprehensive academic foundation and outstanding performance came to the attention of the renowned airport construction expert Prof. XXX, under whose direction I undertook my graduation project Design of an Airport Runway. In this project, I completed the overall design of a civil airport together with the airport’s roadnet. The roadnet design fully met the relevant national standards and the overall airport layout was rationally designed, leading to unanimously positive evaluation by the reviewing panel.
My undergraduate program was immediately followed by a postgraduate program at XX University, into which I was enrolled in my capacity as the top performer in the entrance examination. On a fiercer lever of competition, I doubled my academic efforts and managed to be among the top five in my class, winning “Class-A” scholarships. My active involvement in research also bore fruits. I published several research papers, including XX, in such central natural science journals as XX and XX.
Entitled Study of the Low-Noise Mechanism of the Asphalt Pavement, my Master’s thesis focused on those issues: the mechanism of noise production of tyres, the parameters affecting the tyre’s noise, the noise-absorbing mechanism of asphalt pavement and the pavement configuration parameters affecting the low-noise asphalt pavement. The thesis offered in-depth analysis of the effective voidage of the asphalt pavement and the pavement thickness as major factors in reducing the noise production. The new subject as well as the unique perspectives of my thesis won positive comments from the reviewing panel who rated my work as “significant for the subsequent research on low-noise asphalt pavement”.
My distinguished academic performance and research potential led to my employment with XX Province Expressway Co., Ltd. which made me responsible for the construction and management of the XX Expressway, a key national project. As a major technical specialist, I was in overall charge of drafting relevant tender documents of pavement, participating in the construction of the roadbed, bridge, and pavement, organizing the spot check of the raw materials for the asphalt pavement, holding meeting to discuss technical details of the asphalt pavement, launching technical trainings and field inspections, implementing the Superpave projects. The accumulation of rich and comprehensive experience in construction and management, and the problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively and efficiently, both independently and in teams, are the three most important results I have achieved. Over the past four years, I have been given the “Model Employee” honor in my work performance evaluation.
An equally important component of my employment is my independent research work. Two more papers, Construction Craft and Quality Control of SMA and Application of Superpave in XX Kaiyang Expressway were published in XX (national core journal of highway transportation). Some experts believe my papers offer detailed elaboration on highway SMA and Superpave pavement, providing important reference for the construction of other expressway projects.
While feeling proud for engaging in national-level projects, I have also gained an insider’s knowledge of China’s underdeveloped conditions of civil engineering in road and highway construction. The areas of study that I will focus in my proposed Ph.D. program are closely connected with those conditions—the methods of designing asphalt mixture, predictive evaluation of asphalt pavement performance, quality control of asphalt pavement construction, and the regeneration technology of old asphalt pavement. I expect that through your program I will be extensively exposed to the latest theoretical and technical developments in the world academia and take up fruitful research. If your highly selective program accepts applicants with sound academic performance, rich work experience and promising research potential, I can assert, without any shame of arrogance, that I am exactly the candidate you are looking for.
i graduated from xxx university, my major is xxx, and i want to apply xxx at your university. i am very passionate about xxxx and i wish that i can become an expert in xxxx industry. for this reason, i apply for xxxx at your university. and i understand that xxxx university is famous for xxxx major, it has established a great reputation in xxx industry, lots of graduations from xxx university become leader in xxx industry. i want to become one of them, and therefore, i am very interested and keen to be involved in your university…
my preparation for your program has been expansive and thorough. first, i have a solid background in xxx and xxx. additionally, during my undergraduate years, i joined a club called xxx focused on xxx. our projects dealt with xxx, and other xxx. my work outside the classroom, in job placements through xxx university, granted me excellent opportunities for real-world experience.
while exploring the possibility of graduate-level work, i discovered that my interests are perfectly matched with your program. my interest in xxx, especially, was piqued during my xxx class. the aspects of the xxx fascinated me and made me long to supervise a large project in this field one day. although i realize my current limitations, my whole-hearted enthusiasm, combined with guidance from your exceptional faculty, will carry me through the rigors of studying and forge me into an expert xxx after the two year m.s. coursework and the subsequent ph.d. courses.
upon graduation from your school, i plan to work as a xxx in a xxx company or as a researcher at an institute. participating in the development of xxx would fulfill my aspirations. in the long term, i would like to become a professor in order to share my knowledge and experience and instruct the next generation of xxx.
“Nothing is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow". This old saying always lingers in my mind; it reminds me that every dream can be reached through hard work...”
“America is the most advanced place for XXX. Your department is an idea place for research, not only because there are many great researchers but because the rich atmosphere of University of B is very attractive as well……”

Personal Statement
A recent piece of news coming out of America caught my attention: Condoleezza Rice, the former US Secretary of State, became one of the first female members to be admitted to the Augusta National Golf Club. The Augusta National Golf Club is the home of the Masters tournament which had, until about a month ago, excluded women throughout its 80-year history. I have read about Rice’s background and her accomplishments in so many areas ranging from sports to music to academics, not to mention politics and international affairs. She has proven again and again the Russian proverb “women can do everything; men can do the rest” and the Chinese saying “women can hold up half of the sky.”
I cannot picture myself playing golf, nor do I intend to, because, while I like sports in general, I am not athletically inclined. However, like Rice, I am not unfamiliar with what historically has been considered to be men’s territory. I am a material forming and control engineering student and my area of interest has been the microcosmic mechanism of steel and other alloy materials, an area in which female students are definitely in the minority. For me, my interest in science, particularly materials science, was natural. My grandfather belonged to the first generation of pilots of the People’s Republic of China. I grew up under his care. The type of stories he shared with me were often a mixture his encounters with Chinese and world leaders he had flown and the mechanical features of the flight deck. My father is not a pilot, but his job requires that he spends most of his work hours in the cockpit of aircrafts as a radio communication maintenance engineer. I have lost count of the number of times I accompanied him to test radio signals or fix radio problems. Under the influence of my grandpa and my father, I developed an early interest in mechanics, electric circuits, physics and chemistry.
It was later in college that I gained a much deeper appreciation of the complicated and almost mysterious inner workings of metal materials. The study of metallography and heat treatment guided me into the microcosmic world. Heat treatment processes such as quenching and tempering can significantly change these properties. I also investigated the mechanical properties of materials, defects and their propagation, as well as their behavior under static, dynamic, and cyclic loads. With the help electron microscope, I observed feather-shaped lower bainite and needle-shaped high bainite. All these phenomena fully demonstrate the amazing nature of this discipline.
During my junior year I did an internship at Rizhao Iron and Steel Works, where I gained practical experience in ingot casting, foundry techniques, blast furnace extraction, and electrolytic extraction. As I learnt the intricacies of removing impurities such as sulfur, phosphorus and excess carbon from raw iron and adding alloying elements such as manganese, nickel, chromium and vanadium to create the desired properties, I constantly drew the analogy between cooking and steelmaking. We make primary, secondary and HIsarna steelmaking processes more interesting in very much the same way we try to spice up our cooking recipes with all kinds of ingredients; certainly we can fine-tune the heating and cooling processes just as we monitor our cooking temperature for the desired result. I thought steelmaking is eminently suited to women. Which is not to it is not suited to men. I am not suggesting or trying to stereotype women as fine cooks in the kitchen; in fact, some of the best cooks I have seen on televised Iron Chef competitions are men. What I am saying is that even Steelmaking is certainly a field that calls for creativity. And, when it comes to creativity, women have much to bring to the table.
I was a member of a project team that studied a new automatic steel-teeming system with an electromagnetic induction coil. The new system uses Fe-C alloy to replace traditional stuffing, and applies the electromagnetic induction to heat the alloy, which realizes the automatic tapping. Consequently, the system increases the pouring rate and improves the purity of molten steel, being meaningful in practice. During the experiment, after looking up relative information and contacting actual manufacturers, I finally found an alloy material which could resist high temperatures and so I applied for a patent. Meanwhile, while dealing with joint parts, our group associated it with real life and took the way fire hydrants link together as our model. At last, we got satisfactory results.
Both the United States and China have made significant strides in providing equal opportunity for women. The differences are not very great in this area. For me, as an aspiring material scientist, the differences lie in the American tradition of excellence and the level of development in materials science research. There, extensive availability and use of sophisticated, state-of-the-art equipment provide students and researchers the tools necessary for high-resolution examination of compositions, structures and the defects of materials. I am naturally drawn to intellectually challenging environments where the worlds’ best and brightest men and women congregate to compare notes, to explore and drive the creation of new products and even new industries and to lead in the advancement of science and technology.
With influential faculty and abundant resources, Carnegie Mellon University is my top choice. I am specifically interested in the realm of microstructural science. The goal of this program is to understand the origins of the quantifiable characteristics of polycrystals and soft materials that arise during processes, to develop strategies for influencing these characteristics, and to define microstructural metrics that can be directly related to macroscopic properties and performance. I hope I have the opportunity to work together with your eminent faculty. I believe that my dream to devote myself to the study of materials can be realized with the help of your graduate training program.
I am an undergraduate student from XXX University……
Communications, Media & Culture personal statement
I am hoping to read for a communications, media and culture degree. I find it remarkable, inspiring and a little bit frightening how the media exercise control over our lives, whilst offering rich cultural rewards. I am fascinated by the action and effects of human communications of all kinds and am keen to extend the insight I have gained so far.
My interest in the subject began through my GCSE Media Studies and my knowledge of the subject area has expanded at A-level where I am acquiring analytical skills, helping me unpack and contextualise a wider variety of media forms. My other A-levels are English Language, Sociology, Critical Thinking and Philosophy &Ethics, and these are giving me a broad overview of life and human communications and culture. An example of how these subjects support each other would be studying the marxist concept of hegemony and applying it to religion, media ownership, the high culture/low culture debate in sociology and even the bourgeois emphasis on Standard English.
I've slowly been gaining practical experience alongside my academic learning. Two years ago, I was lucky enough to get work experience with a television crew on location as a runner. I learnt the value of working as a member of the team in a stressful environment and I gained an understanding of the processes of TV production. I have also been involved in several other media projects, some as coursework and others undertaken independently.Coursework projects have included a magazine for young male teenagers; designing a product and advertising campaign; and producing, directing and presenting a documentary for sixth formers and their parents on the EMA system. As extra-curricular activities, I designed a poster and Internet campaign for one of the school plays and in the absence of any existing school publication, I launched a bimonthly newsletter, aimed at Angley's students. These projects have provided great learning experiences, enabling me to develop print software skills in a creative way.
Other school activities have included, the lead male role in 'South Pacific' and significant roles in 'Oliver' and 'West Side Story' as well as assisting the Performing Arts A-level group perform their comedy show. By playing roles on stage, my confidence has increased and I have learnt to appreciate and learn from the talents of others. I am also a school prefect, which I find satisfying and a great privilege.
In my leisure time I enjoy making films - mostly parodies of various genres. I then edit the films using a programme called Magix Movie Edit Pro. I have also edited on Final Cut Express, which has made an interesting comparison. My next project is to learn Final Cut Pro, and to develop a more effects-driven style. I also like to read, for example, I was inspired by Naomi Klein's book No Logo on the effects of globalization, the commoditisation of our culture and public spaces and how powerful brands have become. I am currently reading Graeme Burton's Media & Society to gain some additional perspective on my A2 media and to prepare myself for my degree.
So far I have enjoyed myself in my studies and hopefully have developed some of the skills and qualities for success in degree-level communications, media and culture studies.
